DSU Scholarships Explained: The €7,000 Most Students Miss
Italy's regional right-to-study grant is the most valuable award available to international students — and the most commonly botched application.
Ask a student why they chose Italy and they will usually mention low tuition. Ask what a DSU grant is and you will often get a blank look. This is the single most expensive gap in knowledge in the whole process.
What DSU actually is
DSU — diritto allo studio universitario, the right to university study — is a regional benefit, not a university one. Each region runs its own agency: EDISU in Piemonte, ER.GO in Emilia-Romagna, DSU Toscana in Tuscany, DiSCo in Lazio, ADiSU in Umbria. They publish their own call for applications, their own income thresholds and their own deadlines.
A full award typically combines a cash stipend, a complete tuition waiver, free or heavily subsidised canteen meals, and priority for a dormitory place. Depending on region and whether you are classified as living away from home, the package is commonly worth €5,000 to €7,300 a year.
Why applications fail
The deadline is before you arrive. Most regions close applications in July, August or early September — while you are still at home waiting on a visa. Students who plan to 'sort it out once I land' have already missed it.
The ISEE parificato is wrong or late. This is the Italian income assessment for families whose income is earned abroad. It requires your family's income and asset documentation translated and legalised, then processed through a CAF office. It takes weeks. Start it in May, not August.
Merit requirements are missed in year two. First-year awards are income-based, but renewal requires a credit threshold by a fixed date. Students who take a light first semester lose the grant in year two and are genuinely surprised.
What to do about it
Pick your region with the grant in mind, not only the university ranking. A slightly lower-ranked university in a region with a generous, less competitive call can leave you thousands of euros better off. Then work backwards from the regional deadline — that date, not the admission deadline, is the real start of your timeline.
