ISEE Parificato: The Document That Sets Your Tuition
One piece of paperwork decides whether you pay €156 or €3,900 a year. Here is how it is calculated and where it goes wrong.
Italian public universities do not charge a flat fee. They charge on a band determined by your family's assessed economic position, and for a family earning outside Italy that assessment is the ISEE parificato.
How it is calculated
The calculation weighs household income, movable assets such as bank balances, immovable assets such as property, and household composition. The output is a single figure. Universities publish a band table against that figure — below the first threshold you may pay only the regional tax and stamp duty, often around €156.
Where it goes wrong
The most common failure is incomplete documentation. Every income source and every property must be documented, translated into Italian and legalised through the Italian consulate or an authorised channel. A missing rental income or an undeclared inherited plot discovered later can invalidate the assessment and trigger a retroactive tuition recalculation.
The second is timing. A CAF office needs weeks, and universities set a hard deadline after which you are automatically placed in the highest band with no appeal. Being placed in the top band because a translation was late is an expensive administrative error, not a financial one.
Practical advice
Begin assembling family documents the moment you receive an offer. Use a CAF office experienced with foreign income — not every office is. And keep a complete copy of everything submitted; if the university audits your file in year two, you will need to produce it quickly.
